What is IONM?

Intraoperative neuromonitoring, IONM, or intraoperative neurophysiological  monitoring is the use of various electrophysiological methods to monitor nearby parts of the nervous system for any given surgery, planned or emergent.  Patients benefit from neuromonitoring when their operation poses a risk to the anatomy or physiologic integrity of the involved nervous system.  The overall goal is to maintain patient safety and to ensure that the best patient outcome be achieved.  Our intraoperative technician works closely with the surgeon and our neurophysiologist is monitoring the neuro-electrophysiologic signals obtained by our technician throughout the course of the surgical operation.  There is growing evidence-based support for IOM over the last decade.
